There is no doubt about the importance of communication to people's lives. In the book "Robinson Crusoe", Crusoe helps a prisoner to escape, later naming his new companion "Friday". I think the most important reason why Crusoe helps him is not the desire of obtaining one or two servants, but the wish, prompted by loneliness, of being accompained by others, who even cannot speak English.

It is people's normal demand to communicate with each other. Therefore, it is not hard to understand that it is really cruel and severity to put a prisoner in solitary without communication with anyone.

Back to topic, why communication and teamwork is important to an engineering student like me. As the above mentioned, as a person, any of us must and have to communicate. Moreover, as a person who is involved different kinds of relationship with family, friends, teammates(which is mainly discussed in this module) or workmates, an engineer has to learn how to deal with teamwork. To apply teamwork properly, we need communication. Now, we can figure out that teamwork is based on good communication and neither of them can be ignored.

Communication is part of our lives, but it does not mean that we can communicate well. In fact, most of us have some disadvantage(s) over communication. And this is one of the reasons for us to take this module in NUS, not just for graduation, but also for our better future. Though teamwork is also quite important, we should focus on how to improve our communication skills for us to communicate effectively in a team and I believe we will make great progress at the end of this module.

  1. Hey hey Zhu Li. I agree with you that humans love companionship. We do not live alone. We live and work with many people around us. Thus, it is important that we communicate well with people so as to convey our thoughts and ideas to them.
You also mentioned that effective communication is important for us-engineers. I totally agree with you on this! As what I know engineers don't work alone. Engineers often have to work in teams for projects. Many hands build a home. Working in a group allows us to gain new perspectives to certain issues and also allows us to gain new experiences and knowledge. Therefore, I also feel that effective communication skills are important in our lives. Let's us work hard to becoming a better teamplayer with excellent communication skills!

  2. Hi Zhu Li.

I agree with your point that the desire for communication and interaction is something instinctive to human. I feel that your example of Robinson Crusoe helped to illustrate your point well. I also agree with the sentiment that although teamwork is important, coming hand-in-hand with effective communication, mastering the art of communication would be a more general concern, as it can be applied to all walks of our lives as you had mentioned. You mentioned that the college stipulates we take this module, and I think this might be because they recognize the importance of effective communication and hence wish to inculcate us with such knowledge. I hope that we can all pick up skills that will last us a lifetime in this course!

  3. Hi Zhu Li,

I like your example on Robinson Crusoe, as this clearly illustrates human beings’ essential and basic need for companionship and a social life. It is believed that companionship is a factor that increases human longevity! Effective communication helps keep relationships strong. Therefore, it is understandable how effective communication is essential to us, as relationships and social activities are a central part of our lives.

I also agree with your point that although we all communicate, it does not mean we can communicate well. Problems like misunderstandings and inefficiency are not likely to arise with effective communication. This takes some experience, practice and awareness of the skills required to connect with others. This does illustrate the importance and relevance of taking this module.

  4. I appreciate all of your detailed comments. I am glad that you agree with some of my points and you are tolerate towards some faults in my post. During this week's tutorial 2, I realized that I made a mistake in my post 1. Ms Happy mentioned that our post should focus on why communication and teamwork are important for ourselves and I think I did not write much on that, I mostly discussed why they are important instead. Next time, I will pay more attention to the topic and understand its meaning fully.

  5. hey Zhu Li,

sry abt the late comment.. blogspot is blocked in China =[ anyway yea as u might have realized, you blog should be focusing more on your personal experience rather than just talking about general situations. However, i do think your mentioning of basic human needs for communication provides an interesting perspective for us to look into this matter. Yea as Abraham Maslow proposed in his hierarchy of needs, communication is put under second level of needs that must be met for one to survive. So as you can see, we need to communicate not just to promote efficiency, but also to satisfy our basic human needs. Overall nice post with insightful example, you may wish to make it more organized next time though, keep the gd work up =]
